On Cloud Nine with LonWorks Home Automation System

By this autumn, Cloud Nine Co., Ltd. expects to be complete with its next-generation, smart
home project. The house, located in the mountains of Tokyo, Japan, features a state- of-the-art home automation system con-trolled by Echelon 's LonWorks technology. "From the beginning, we knew the LonWorks platform was superior in its communication method and that it provided easy implementation for a control network, "says Jeffrey H. Horiuchi, President and CEO of Cloud Nine Co., Ltd. The simple integration of devices from various manufacturers enables integrators to add or modify devices and expand the network at any time. These devices can be monitored and controlled over the Internet.

Turning up the Heat

During the winter months, the temperature drops below zero, causing water pipelines to freeze and burst. To prevent pipes from burst- ing, Echelon 's LonPoint modules monitor temperature, humidity sensors from Siemens and a Hitachi anti-freeze valve evaluate and heat the pipes when necessary;and, if the pipeline does burst, an alarm will notify the homeowner 's mobile phone. The home also features a LonWorks based home theater system that offers preset buttons for ambiance control. With a single click, the blinds close, the screen descends, the lights dim, and the movie begins. Cloud Nine Co., Ltd. has high expectations for this project. "It is my belief that the cottage will improve the occupant 's standard of living. And for such a lofty goal, only LonWorks will do, "says Horiuchi. The success of the LonWorks controlled test home will help gauge the future of home automation in Japan. For more information on Cloud Nine and its home automation test case, visit www.cl9.net.
