Cummins Onan Announces Next Generation LonWorks® Solution For On-Site Power Generation

Market Leader Builds on Echelon's Open Platform

(ATLANTA, Georgia - January 29, 2001) - At today's International Air Conditioning Heating Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo), Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) and Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CUM) announced the latest release of LonWorks® based PowerCommand® products including the LonMark® certified Command Module and Network Command Module for standby and prime-rated power generation systems. Hundreds of first-generation LonWorks based PowerCommand systems have been installed in public and investor-owned utilities; telecommunications/Internet service providers; manufacturing environments; and healthcare, commercial/industrial, and institutional facilities with a need for reliable power. With the new PowerCommand products, Cummins looks to expand its share in the on-site power generation market and, through LonMark interoperability, more fully integrate its products into intelligent LonWorks based buildings and factories.

Ron Moore, vice president and general manager, Cummins Power Generation Americas, stated, "By building on Echelon's LonWorks platform, we have been able to create a market-leading set of products. Hundreds of customers have turned to our PowerCommand systems because of their superior reliability and performance features including: 200-plus diagnostic monitoring functions, seamless remote monitoring and control capabilities, and plug-and-play interoperability with most building automation and SCADA systems. Because it is a common, open, industry standard, the open architecture of our LonMark certified products enables our on-site power systems to easily become an integrated part of a total building automation system for enhanced, reduced-cost operation."

Cummins' new line of network communications products will monitor and control either the entire emergency power system or a single PowerCommand generator set. PowerCommand provides diagnostics to closely monitor generator performance. Fault codes included in its memory aid in the quick diagnosis of possible fault conditions including: low oil pressure, battery, and fuel level. Remote notification of faults and access to the system can be provided using Echelon's SLTA-10 serial LonTalk® adapters over standard telephone lines or over the Internet using Echelon's i.LON™ 1000 Internet Server. Superior reliability and service minimize the possibility of interrupted operation. PowerCommand can also be paralleled with other generator sets and the utility.

"Loss of power is more than just an inconvenience," said Beatrice Yormark, Echelon's vice president of sales and marketing. "To manufacturers it can mean thousands of dollars in lost profits and destroyed production. To hospitals, telecommunications companies, and other emergency services providers it represents potential injury or the loss of life. PowerCommand has already become a leader in these applications and, with this new generation of LonMark certified products, should become an even more attractive solution for businesses and utilities. With the current high level of public awareness of the importance and need for reliable power brought on by California's energy crisis, we are especially pleased to be working with Cummins Power Generation to provide affordable and reliable power generation solutions to businesses and utilities."

Cummins Power Generation Group has been using Echelon's LonWorks technology in its PowerCommand line of products and has been a LonMark Interoperability Association member since 1994.
